Circular water features

The following are some examples of potential water features which could be specified for the Southern Health Healing garden. A circular aesthetic has been sought, to comply with our current design scheme.

A1 Rubber

Our floor design is rather colourful and patterned so, we looked into a simple yet effective material to cater for this purpose.
We sourced 'A1 Rubber', an Australian owned company who specialise in manufacturing recycled rubber, raw materials and rubber products.

We have chosen a product by CSBR, Australia's Premium Colour-coated Rubber Crumb by A1 Rubber.

A1's website is http://www.a1rubber.com/

Bill's Backyard

After all this research into gardens, I overlooked a very close site which is another example of a healing garden. My very own backyard...

My semi-retired father has spent much of his time recently on gardening! He says the act of planting and looking after the plants is relaxing and calming.

Here are the results so far!

The garden is an absolute chaos...but this sense of chaos gives it a fun character, full of curiosity and discoveries. It has a rather mannerist quality to it. Hidden around the garden are statues of animals, gnomes and miscellaneous objects and a couple of water features. There is no sense of planning in the garden at all...just intuition of where objects should go.

When I asked him why he preferred to use free standing pots in the concreted area of the backyard, my dad responded that he didn't want the space to feel too rigid. Potted plants are moveable and provide the flexibility for change to occur.

Should the healing garden at Monash Medical centre have this attribute of flexibility?

Musical Installations

Bertoia Sound Sculptures

The Bertoia Sound Sculpture exerts a metallic, reverberating 'clang'. As Indigenous Australian music is more timber percussive, something similar to these sculptures could be created but with timber heads instead of metal heads to make a more 'woody' sound.

An alternative material to use could be Bamboo. Bamboo is a readily available material, abundant in numbers.

Indigenous Australian Music.

After viewing serveral Aboriginal artworks, I began to imagine what these pieces of artwork would feel like in 3dimensional form. I’ve interpreted the dotted patterns as ‘pulses’ or ‘beats’ of rhythm. There is also often a sense of ‘grouping’ or ‘nodes’ within Aboriginal artwork. I’ve taken these two observations into consideration when thinking about the design.

1. The ‘Pulses’.

I have interpreted the ‘pulses’ in aboriginal paintings as beats of rhythm. I began to explore traditional aboriginal music.
The traditional music of holds a lot of meaning to their culture. Music is used throughout an aboriginal’s life to teach what must be known about their culture, abot their place in it and about its place in the world of nature and supernature. Music was even used to communicate with animals!

From a young age, an aboriginal is encouraged to dance and sing about everyday tasks. Music is learnt by imitation and passed onw ithout reference to any written notations. To the Australian Aboriginal, music is understood naturally and is an integral part of life, unlike western culture where music tends to be separated from life. For example, in western culture, a student must learn and understand the theory and practice of written music.

Merrill Bray - macro, micro and in between.

After seeing Merrill Bray's work on display at the Southern Health, Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, Melbourne, VIC, the vision of 3-dimentionalising a 2d piece of artwork came to mind. When you look at a Merrill Bray piece, you're not simply looking at it. You'll find yourself looking into it.

The simple dots create a captivating sense of depth which draws the viewer into the painting.
